Study Links Depo-Provera to Brain Tumors

A recent study has found a strong link between Depo-Provera and the development of meningioma brain tumors:
Study Details: Published in March 2024 in the British Medical Journal, the study investigated the link between certain hormone medications (progestogens) and brain tumors using data from the French National Health Data System. It included 108,366 women, with 18,061 who had surgery for meningioma.
Key Findings:
  • Long-term use (over one year) of certain progestogens, including medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA, which is in Depo-Provera), was linked to an increased risk of meningioma.
  • Other hormonal treatments, like some IUDs and different progesterone types, showed no increased risk.
Odds Ratio: The study showed that women using Depo-Provera were over five times (odds ratio of 5.55) more likely to develop meningioma than non-users. Specifically, 0.05% of the cases had exposure to MPA compared to 0.01% in the control group.
